THE PRICE FOR A KITTEN...

By Anne Michalowski-Mouchaud

It is often said that the price for a purely-bred kitten is much increased and that this is very profitable when a litter is sold...

So which are the expenses of a serious cat-breeder?

I had a little fun making a calculation... I only took into account the expenses with Pléiade, our russian blue cat, excluding the ones with our 2 house cats (who cost us much more!)

Timespan of calculation

The period of my calculation lasted from June 1999 until December 2000 (that would be 1 year and a half of considered spendings). I took into account the expenses from our first litter (4 kitten).

The facts that are additionally taken into account when putting the price for a kitten

  1. the rarity of the breed
  2. offer and demand law
  3. the difficulty to find a beautiful male in a good health condition in a serious cattery for pairing purposes, and the distance of the male location
  4. the seriousness of the cat-breeder where the cat is purchased:

All these facts are not costless and are to be taken into consideration as well

It is better to pay a bit more for a cat in a good health condition than to buy a cat "on sale" that would make you frequently attend the veterinary!

That is why we do not cut prices for kittens and we do not sell them to the one who offer more.

We offer our kittens to serious and conscious buyers who respect the cats and ourselves, and are aware of the costs (in terms of time and money) that are included in owning a pet.

Breeding cats is only rarely profitable. Breeding cats is a passion, much more than a simple hobby! !

Selling kittens helps the cat-breeder covering his expenses , or at least a part of them. But you will never cover everything by gaining irregularly money.

If we sell a kitten for at least 1200 CHF (5000 FF), we can cover all the expenses only with a litter of at least 4 kittens, and in circumstances where all of them are in a good health condition.

But still, one litter per year or once in two years (in the case where we have only one reproductive female) implies more expenses than profits, especially if it includes only one or two kittens, and if there's any other kind of problem (like a Caesarean operation that costs around 500.- CHF) or any health problem with the kittens.

We have to analyze the spendings and profits for a longer period of time: a serious cat-breeder takes care of the reproductive female during several years not only before, but also after the kittens are sold!

These prices can be regulated according to the opinion that we make upon the quality of the kittens at the age of 3 months, and upon their evolution in time. This doesn't mean that the quality of the kittens that are sold at low prices is poor, we only consider them as less qualified for competing in different feline exhibitions or for the reproduction. The price for a kitten is mainly set according to the expenses that we carry, and that are increasing each year, also according to the "market price". Then, we think that we seriously invest in our blue russian cats and kittens, and that the prices should equally reflect the efforts made for an qualitative breeding...

For the year 2004, the price for a kitten is set at CHF 1400.-

We wish you a lot of pleasure and happiness with your all-blue feline!
